Mrs. Slater holds a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Diversity and Labor Relations from Silver Lake College, as well as two Master's degrees from Arkansas Tech University: one in Spanish Language and Literature and another in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
With over five years of teaching experience in China, including rural Zhejiang, Qingdao, Sanya, and currently Beijing, Mrs. Slater brings a wealth of knowledge to her classrooms. Her extensive teaching background spans more than twenty years and includes roles such as:
Teaching academic writing for graduate students and serving as the Foreign Language Laboratory Coordinator at Arkansas Tech University; Instructing Academic Writing, English as a Second Language, and Beginning Spanish at the University of the Ozarks; Facilitating community adult education programs in Russellville, Arkansas; Teaching English as a Second Language in Coopesilencio, Costa Rica.
In addition to her teaching roles, Mrs. Slater has been actively involved in academic advising for undergraduate and graduate school admissions since 2016, guiding students through their educational journeys.
Mrs. Slater teaches Intermediate English (ENGL3001) and a semester-long onboarding course titled Public Speaking and Performance (OBPJ2012). The Public Speaking and Performance course is specifically designed to help learners develop teamwork skills while building a strong foundation in public speaking. It focuses on enhancing students' confidence and providing strategies to overcome stage fright.
Mrs. Slater is dedicated to professional growth, especially in regards to differentiated instruction. She actively seeks out learning opportunities that enhance her dynamic classroom environment, ensuring that she meets each student where they are and supports them in achieving their personal best. She places a high value on the strong relationships she cultivates with her students and takes great joy in watching them gain confidence in their abilities.
Additionally, Mrs. Slater has a passion for reading, having curated and catalogued a private collection of over 300 books. She eagerly shares her collection with both colleagues and students, believing wholeheartedly that books deserve to be read and explore.
