Phoenix Yang is a dedicated educator with a Master's Degree in TESOL from the University of Stirling. Passionate about fostering enriching learning experiences, she focuses on understanding how Chinese students learn English in culturally specific contexts. Phoenix actively experiments with innovative teaching methods to enhance students' confidence and skills in mastering the language.

Phoenix teaches Introductory and Pre-Intermediate English courses, designing engaging lessons that emphasize communication, critical thinking, and cultural understanding. She adapts her teaching to suit her students' unique needs, inspiring them to confidently use English in both academic and everyday contexts.

She specializes in rethinking traditional teaching methods to better align with her students' cultural backgrounds. She values the strong, trusting relationships she builds with students and coachees, encouraging open communication and mutual respect. Outside work, Phoenix enjoys gaming and reading, constantly exploring new ideas and strategies to fuel her creativity in the classroom.

ENGL1001: Introductory-level English

Why do people come up with stories to explain things we don’t understand? How do we decide what’s fair? What do the lives of the minority look like? What is your relationship with the world, our society, and yourself? Questions like these will be discussed in this course, and you are going to develop deeper insights on topics related to the meaning of life after you join the classroom and interact with your smart peers. Introduction-level English combines ESL and ELA learning and is designed to build basic English language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) for learners as well as introduce the fundamental concepts of literary studies to learners. In this course, narrative writing skills and argumentative writing skills will be focused on scaffolding learners to tell their own personal stories as well as to address their own opinions with strong arguments and textual evidence. Speeches, books, and films will be applied to hone learners' speaking and presenting skills. The aim of this course is to guide learners' development of using basic English appropriately to express their own viewpoints by reading and imitating different genres of texts.

ENGL2001: Pre-intermediate-level English

This Pre-intermediate-level English course consists of ESL and ELA learning and is designed to develop learners' English language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) through engaging and complex units of study. There will also be a focus on explaining and applying grammar and vocabulary related to the topics in each unit. This year's course is designed around the themes of "Personal Awareness and Intimacy". Learners will read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts, engage in classroom discussions and out-of-class research, and learn to effectively communicate ideas in writing, from personal, informal journaling to academic essays. Each unit integrates reading and writing with digital tools and multimedia. Learners will have multiple opportunities to deliver presentations and performances. This course will culminate with a major PBL performance and a portfolio of learner writings.

Romeo & Juliet: Textual Analysis Report

Disciplines/Subjects: Pre-Intermediate-level English Key Themes: Can Shakespeare's view of love and worldview still define intimacy in contemporary society? This final PA of this semester allows students to demonstrate their understanding of literary analysis through Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Building on prior work with word choice, character development, and analyzing sonnets, students will explore three key areas: Word Choice – Investigating why knowing the play's ending is crucial before viewing it. Development – Examining whether love truly causes personal growth in the characters. Theme/Central Idea – Defining the concept of "love" as presented in the play. Throughout this unit, students will apply their analytical skills to explore how Shakespeare uses language and character evolution to convey complex themes of love and fate. This project deepens their critical thinking while synthesizing previous learnings into a cohesive portfolio.
